Unit 4- Gender and Society (approximately Thursday, October 1st – Wednesday, October 21st)
The central text for Unit 4 will be A Doll House by Henrik Ibsen from the textbook.
Students will choose their parallel reading novel for this unit from the following five books:
□A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseni
a.Mariam is an illegitimate child, and suffers from both the stigma surrounding her birth along with the abuse she faces throughout her marriage. Laila, born a generation later, is comparatively privileged during her youth until their lives intersect and she is also forced to accept a marriage proposal from Rasheed, Mariam's husband.
□The Dressmaker of Khair Khana: Five Sisters, One Remarkable Family, and the Woman Who Risked Everything to Keep them Safe by Gayle Tzemach Lemmon
a.The Dressmaker of Khair Khana is a book by author Gayle Tzemach Lemmon, published in March 2011 byHarperCollins. It documents the story of Kamila Sidiqi, a young female entrepreneur working during the years ofTaliban rule inAfghanistan, a time when the rights of women were severely restricted.
a.The Joy Luck Club (1989) is a best-sellingnovel written byAmy Tan. It focuses on fourChinese American immigrant families inSan Francisco who start a club known as The Joy Luck Club, playing the Chinese game of mahjong for money while feasting on a variety of foods.
□Two Badges: The Lives of Mona Ruiz by Mona Ruiz
a.Mona Ruiz grew up in a gang lifestyle, but she always wanted to become a police officer. Would Mona get the chance to change her future, or would the gangs decide for her?
*Students will need to obtain a copy of their chosen book for Unit 4 by Thursday, October 1st.
Some of the novels on this list have more mature themes than others, so parent approval for all choices is mandatory.
